Table of contents ØIntroduction of Pump  Centrifugal and Reciprocating Pump  Main parts of centrifugal pump  Main parts of reciprocating pump  Selection of Pump  Performance characteristics of pumps  Starting speed of Pumps  Conclusion

Introduction of Pump Device that moves fluid by mechanical action Action achieved by creating low pressure at the inlet and high pressure at outlet Operate via many energy sources like manual operation, electricity, engines etc Electrical pumps are classified into two types: 1) Centrifugal Pump 2) Reciprocating Pump

Centrifugal and Reciprocating Pump Centrifugal Pump It is one of the rotary pumps which used kinetic energy of impeller It continuously discharges the fluid It is mostly used for domestic purpose and where higher discharge at low head required Reciprocating Pump It is a positive displacement type pump which is forced by piston It does not discharge the fluid continuously These are mostly used in industries and high viscous fluid pumped at a high head

Main parts of centrifugal pump 1)Suction pipe 2)Impeller 3)Shaft (Rotor) 4)Stuffing box 5)Casing 6)Bearings 7)Wearing rings 8)Delivery pipe Source :

Main parts of reciprocating pump 1)Suction Pipe 2)Suction Valve 3)Delivery Pipe 4)Delivery Valve 5)Cylinder 6)Piston and Piston Rod 7)Crank and Connecting Rod 8)Strainer 9)Air Vessel Figure : Reciprocating pump Source :

Selection of Pump TitleCentrifugal PumpReciprocating Pump  Cost and sizeCheaper, domestic uses, less space. Expensive, industrial uses, large space.  PerformanceFlow rate varies, good handling of non-viscous liquid Constant flow rate, good handling of non-viscous liquid  ShearingHigh speed, shearing of liquid, not suitable for sensitive liquid Low speed, little shearing, suitable for sensitive liquid  EfficiencyPeaks at specific pressure, variation, cavitation may form Greater efficiency than centrifugal  ReliabilityLess maintenanceHigher maintenance  Noise Less noiseMore noise  PartsWidely available and easy to install Lesser available, difficult to install

Performance characteristics of pumps Source :

Starting speed centrifugal Pumps If the pressure rise in the impeller is more than or equal to manometric head (Hm) the centrifugal pump will start delivering water, otherwise, the pump will not discharge any water, though the impeller is rotating. when impeller is rotating, the water in contact with the impeller is also rotating. this is the case of forced vortex.

Conclusion Pump, a device that expends energy in order to raise, transport, or compress fluids. Centrifugal Pumps are smaller, usually for domestic uses and have different efficiency at different pressure. Reciprocating pumps are larger, usually for industrial uses and are more efficient than centrifugal pumps.
