Aims for the session During the afternoon we aim to; Deliver key messages and updates Share how we teach Mathematics in School and what equipment we use to support the children. Give you ideas that you can use at home to support your child.
The EYFS Maths Curriculum is split into two strands of equal weighting and importance. Number and Shape, Space and Measure. Children learn mainly through play in Reception- which is good for Maths- opportunity to explore, test, experiment, discover for themselves. (Role play, songs, stories, real life problems) Different areas of provision provide mathematical opportunities not just the maths area. Element of adult directed teaching through carpet time and focus activities.
The National Curriculum Importance of children gaining breadth and depth of understanding. We aim to ensure pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics. Children can reason mathematically. Can solve problems by applying their mathematics.
End of key stage assessments Statutory Take place at the end of FS and KS1/KS2 End of FS- Teacher assessment reported to Local Authority End of KS1- Teacher assessment reported to Local Authority using SATS as part of the evidence End of KS2 Test scores reported to the Local Authority 2 papers- arithmetic (25 marks/20 minutes) and reasoning (35 marks/ 35 minutes) 80-90% of marks for number 10-20% of marks of measurement, geometry and statistics No equipment can be used except a pencil, eraser and ruler

Workshops 10 minute workshops: Mrs Ponton– Problem Solving Activities Mrs Winkley – Ways to develop Fluency Miss Booth – How to develop reasoning
Visiting classrooms Please spend the next 30 minutes visiting classes. You will see; ‘Magic Maths’ Starter activity providing opportunity for counting and mental arithmetic to demonstrate fluency Multisensory problem solving lesson Opportunities for children to demonstrate their reasoning Reception – whole class input and focused activities
