Denotation vs. Connotation denotation: the dictionary definition of the word, its literal meaning connotation: the meaning suggested by the word based on how it is used in a sentence or text Example: According to the dictionary, both assertive and pushy mean forceful and self-confident; however, the connotation of assertive is positive (+), while the connotation for pushy is negative (-).
Diction diction (also referred to as word choice): the way words are used in writing and speech to evoke the writer’s voice and guide the reader to understand the author’s attitude and expression Example: The woman walking down the street quickly caught my eye; she looked slender and was wearing a pink dress. Synonyms synonyms: words with similar meanings, but they are not identical We use synonyms to express shades of meaning. A slight difference in meaning among synonyms can completely change the meaning of a sentence. When looking at synonyms, think about which words are less intense and more intense. This will help you figure out which synonym is the right word to use in a sentence. Example: The happy couple was newly engaged. The blissful couple was newly engaged.
