Ch 4 Energy Kinetic Energy (KE) – the energy a moving object has because of its motion; depends on mass and speed of object KE = mv2/2 Joule – SI unit of energy J = kg*m2 s2 Potential Energy (PE) – stored energy due to position – will change to energy of motion (kinetic energy)
Ch 4 Energy Elastic Potential Energy – energy stored in an object that is compressed or can stretch or shrink, like a rubber band or a spring Chemical Potential Energy – energy stored in chemical bonds Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE) – energy stored by objects due to their position above Earth’s surface – depends on object’s mass and height or distance above Earth’s surface GPE = mgh = mass (kg) x acceleration of gravity (9.8 m/s2) x height (m) = kg*m2/s2 = Joule
Ch 4 Energy Mechanical Energy – the total amount of potential and kinetic energy in a system Law of Conservation of Energy – energy cannot be created nor destroyed; total amount of energy in the universe is always the same, it just changes from one form to another
