POPULATION After the Administrative Reform in 2017: Sangaste, Puka, Otepää and a part of Palupera Municipalities united. Number of Inhabitants - 6632 (01.01.2017) Area of the Municipality 520,21 km²

HISTORICAL FACTS First mentioned in Novgorod chronicles in 1116 Otepää means “bears head” (oti pää) Otepää is one of the oldest parishes in the Southern-Estonia. On the initiative of bishop Herman of Tartu, the fortress-church was founded near the bishop castle in 1224. The state flag – blue, black and white was blessed in local church on 4 june 1884

TOURISM and SPORT More than 100 km hiking trails (skiing, hiking, cycling) Over 80 different accomodations with more than 2000 beds Over 100 different tourism enteprises and services Over 50 lakes, the biggest – Pühajärv One castle – historical Sangaste Castle Four sport and skicenters – Tehvandi Sport Center, Kääriku Sport Center, Väike-Munamäe Skicenter, Kuutsemäe Resort Tehvandi Sport Center is a favourite place both for athletes and tourists. The main services offered by Tehvandi Sport Center are offering year-round training opportunities for sportsmen, organizing competitions, offering various leisure time activities and catering. BUDGET Municipalit budget is 11,3 million euros. 56% of it goes to education, 11% to sport, culture and youth activities and 10% social work. In 2018, the local municipality will invest 1.1 million euros in repairing and renovating education facilities.
