WALT know diabetes. Type 1 diabetes Type 2 diabetes Usually develops before the age of 20, with a peak at 12 years old. Usually appears after the age of 40. Pancreas stops making insulin, is an auto- immune disorder. Pancreas makes reduced amounts of insulin, or the body does not respond normally to the insulin produced. Treatments include insulin injections, diet control and regular exercise. Treatments include diet control, medication and regular exercise. About 10% of diabetes cases. About 90% of cases. Also called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) Also called non-insulin dependent diabetes Symptoms: develops quickly, tiredness, excessive urine production, weight loss, increased thirst and blurred vision. Symptoms: slow development, same as for type 1 but less severe and may go undetected for many years.

Clicker question ADH (anti-diuretic hormone)is a hormone that regulates the kidneys to maintain the water balance in our body. ADH is produced by the pituitary gland and functions in a negative loop mechanism. When you sweat a lot, the ADH travels in the blood to your kidneys and affect the tubules so that more water is absorbed by your cells. This results in concentrated and small amount of urine. The opposite happens when you don‘t lose too much water, for example on a cold day. Alcohol reduces the amount of ADH produced. This results in… producing lots of urine producing less urine feeling hungry feeling tired

Oral glucose tolerance test Graph shows the result of an oral glucose tolerance test. This test is used to diagnose diabetes. Two patients were given a glucose drink (75g) after fasting overnight and their blood glucose level was measured for the next 2 hours.
