It is divided into centimetres (cm). How many cm are in a metre? In 2 metres? Where would 50cm be on the metre stick? Year 3

In pairs, look around the room and think of objects that you could measure. Which would be more than 1m? Which would be less than 1m? Let’s make a list on the flipchart… Year 3

Problem solving and reasoning Answers Draw a wiggly line of about 10cm in length. Use a piece of damp string to help you measure it accurately. Write its length in cm and mm. Repeat this trying to draw a wiggly line of exactly 10cm. Observe how children set about the task – do they accurately align the damp string along their wiggly line? Mark the end of the line before they straighten the string to measure? When straightened, do they accurately position it alongside a ruler? Can they use mm as well as cm to get an accurate length? True or false • Ten lots of 100mm is the same as 1 metre. True: 10 lots of 100mm is 1000mm (or 100cm) which is the same as 1 metre • Half a centimetre is 50mm.
