Statement of intent Key Stage: KS3 Subject: Music Academic Year: 2019-20 Playing an integral part of everyday life, music should be celebrated and studied thoroughly in school. In our Key Stage 3 music classes, students will explore a variety of mediums and genres, including rap, pop, and a variety of cinematic soundtracks, ranging from horror, science fiction, and animation. In addition, the lessons will provide a strong cross-curricular connection, as students will write lyrics to an original song, study and write music reviews and critiques, and finally use professional software to compose their song, resulting in an individual album for each form group. The journey on which the students will embark will provide a swift transition to Key Stage 4. with the hopes and intentions of preparing a new generations of musicians to inspire audiences in the future.

Curriculum Overview Key Stage: KS3 Subject: Music Academic Year 2019-20 Year Unit content Autumn 1 Autumn 2 Spring 1 Spring 2 Summer 1 Summer 2 7 Introduction to Musical Elements: Introduction to basics elements of music, including tone, pitch and rhythm. Students will also use visual representations to analyse score. Genre Case Study – Rap & Pop: Students will thoroughly study two songs from two different genres, with a focus on social/cultural/historical context, lyrics, and rhythm. Song Writing: Students will be introduced to the necessary skills for song writing, including inspiration, message, and structure. Assessment Students will write, rehearse and perform a short scene, in which tone of voice reflects the narrative and emotions of characters. Student will independently investigate previously unstudied songs, and apply the same analysis to better understand the purpose behind the songs. Students will write, compose and perform an original pop or rap song, using knowledge and understanding from previous units of study.

Curriculum Overview Key Stage: KS3 Subject: Music Academic Year 2019-20 Year Unit content Autumn 1 Autumn 2 Spring 1 Spring 2 Summer 1 Summer 2 8 Film Soundtracks: Students will explore iconic cinematic soundtracks, exploring genre, purpose within the narrative, effect and legacy. Music Reviews & Criticism: Students will explore and analyse music criticism from various mediums, including magazines, newspapers, and videos. CuBase: Students will use the CuBase software to compose music to their written song from the previous year. Assessment Students will conduct a similar investigation and analysis of a cinematic theme, exploring the film genre, purpose, and legacy. Students will choose a composition of their liking, and write a critique (review/criticism) using subject terminology and persuasive techniques. The final products will be played and gathered onto an album.
