Statement of intent Key Stage: 5 Subject: Applied Law Academic Year: 2019-20 The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Law is an Applied General qualification. It is for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment in the legal sector. A Law student will develop a keen interest in learning about: Dispute solving in civil law Investigating aspects of criminal law and the legal system Applying the law Aspects of family law Aspects of tort By the end of Key Stage 5, the intention is that students learn to think, speak and write like legal personnel. They will respond to real cases by engaging as key legal personnel. They will have a good understanding of legal concepts and will be able to use these to apply the law in an unbiased manner. At the same time, they will recognise the situations in which these applications may not become a reality and how law can and will evolve. Written work will be clear, accurate and detailed; and will be structured in the following way: identify / explain / analyse / judgement. A clear chain of reasoning will run through all written work using the PEELA framework. The professional structure of case notes will be learnt and legal terminology will be used with confidence. What could this qualification lead to? The qualification carries UCAS points and will support entry to many higher education courses. The qualification can also support progression to employment directly, or via an Apprenticeship. How does the qualification provide employability skills? There are opportunities throughout the programme to give learners practice in developing employability skills such as: cognitive and problem-solving skills: use critical thinking, approach non-routine problems applying expert and creative solutions, use systems and technology intrapersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self-presentation interpersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development.
