Statement of intent Key Stage: KS4 Subject: GCSE Media Studies Academic Year: 2019-20 With media platform becoming a vital part of our lives, it is important to stop and analyse how and why we rely on it so often, and whether or not we control the messages that are relied to the audience. Through a deep and thorough study of nine different media platforms, the students will assess how meanings, representations, industries, appeal to audiences and social/cultural contexts shape the world around us. The students will study two magazine front covers, focusing on race; two newspapers front pages, focusing on immigration; two print adverts, focusing on gender; and two film posters, focusing on narrative and genre. In addition, the students will explore how the industries of newspapers, radio, film, and video games operate, make money, and attract a mass audience using website and marketing. Furthermore, the students will study two different crime drama television series, showing the stark difference between the traditional and patriarchal society of the 1970’s, and the multicultural life of the 2010’s. Students will also study two modern music videos, analyse their messages and representation, while comparing them with an older music videos from the 1990’s. Students will also analyse how stars of our pop culture use social media to further their brand and interactions with fans, while also examining how website are a powerful marketing tool. Finally, students will conceive of a teen film, and produce a film poster and DVD cover, through an in-depth study of genre, film marketing, representations of teenagers, and the construction of identities.
