Obscuring (verb) Definition: to conceal Sentence: “He’s pushing trunks against the wall, obscuring camel” (355).

Palpable (Adjective) Definition: a feeling or atmosphere so intense as to seem almost tangible. Sentence: “[August’s] not there, but the tension among the menagerie men is palpable” (355).

Belligerent (Adjective) Definition: hostile and aggressive. Sentence: “[Rosie’s] expression is unmistakably belligerent” (368).

Incredulous (Adjective) Definition: not wanting or not able to believe something. Sentence: “He stares at me, incredulous.”

Trepidation (noun) Definition: Fear or worry about what is going to happen. Sentence: “I poke my head in with more than a little trepidation, but Kinko is gone.”

Indignant (Adjective) Definition: angry because of something that is wrong or not fair. Sentence: “’He’s ten years younger than me,’ I say, straightening up indignantly.”

Gesticulate (verb) Definition: Making gestures while speaking. Sentence: “She gesticulates wildly, arms flailing” (403).

Panoply (Noun) Definition: A complete or impressive display of related items. Sentence: “I open my eyes and see a panoply of shifting color and forms.”
