Positive/Negative Space What exactly is the subject? Positive/Negative Space

Usually a drawing starts with a line.

Then fill-in to make the subject seem more “real.”

But sometimes, what the subject really IS becomes unclear. So we make up some art terms: Positive Space: is the subject matter. Negative Space: is everything else—empty.

Positive Space = ?

Sometimes the Positive Space is made by the drawing tool.

Sometimes Positive Space is made by leaving the space EMPTY.

Sometimes The Negative Space Becomes Positive
