Chapter 15 - IP: Software To Create A Virtual Network Introduction Protocol: An Agreement For Communication Basic Functionality: The Internet Protocol IP Software On Every Machine Because all Internet services use the Internet Protocol, a computer must have IP software before it can use the Internet. Internet Packets Are Called Datagrams Each packet sent across the Internet must follow the format specified by the Internet Protocol. Such packets are called IP datagrams.

Chapter 15 - IP: Software To Create A Virtual Network The Illusion Of A Giant Network The Internet operates like a single network that connects several million computers. IP software allows any computer to send an IP datagram to any other computer The Reality Of Internal Structure Datagrams Travel In Packets Every Computer Is Assigned A Unique Address Internet Addresses (IP addresses) : 192.132.89.167 An Odd IP Address Syntax IP Addresses Are Not Random 192.132.89.0-255

Chapter 15 - IP: Software To Create A Virtual Network An Example Trip Through The Internet (use tracert from the command line: ex. tracert jaring.nmhu.edu) IPv4 (current protocol) vs. IPv6 (new protocol which allows more addresses and includes additional security features) Terms IP datagram Internet Protocol (IP) IP address network packet protocol virtual network
