Installation Status in the Linac Tunnel Downtime installation work is underway Removal of accelerator structures went very well. Next few weeks - installing Wall region components L1 and LX accelerator regions BC1 supports BLM region installation begins 11/1 Insertion region installation begins 11/6 Cable connection and checkout begins 12/4

Linac Accelerator Section Removal Before After Making room for the Insertion, L-1 and L-X regions

The X-band accelerator section Klystron, modulator being power tested prior to installation.

Linac Tunnel Downtime Issues Late components, will not hold up commissioning: Vacuum chambers in insertion region. (Jan. 07) BC1 Instrument package. (Jan. 07) Toroids (in several locations) BLM 11 (BLM 12 will be in) Spool pieces are being fabricated to be installed temporarily. Completion of these parts is being aggressively pursued. Linac Access will be made available to install these components.

Injector Vault Installation Status Injector installation has taken second priority to Linac installation. Injector beamline: Accelerator structures, L0a ready, L0b in final bake RF Gun is in hot test 2nd gun (the spare) is in final cold-test. Final braze next. Complete in early Jan. Injector vault: Floor and cable plant installed Support stands are in the vault, Beamline installation underway except for the Gun-to-Linac table

The LCLS photocathode electron gun The new-design LCLS gun, with dual RF feeds. The dual RF feeds have been added to symmetrize the RF entering the gun, eliminating a source of beam emittance growth.

The LCLS Drive Laser Drive Laser installed and operating LSS is installed in laser room and approved. Temporal shaping is being worked on by Thales. Transport optics are being installed and tested.

Injector Vault Installation Issues Late: The GTL support stand will be here 11/16 Laser table install, optics commissioning follows. The Gun will be ready. GTL beamline is late, now in machining. Completion date is 2/8, we are pushing to advance this date and to stage delivery. This leads to a 2 month delay to e- commissioning. Laser commissioning, Controls checkout proceeds The 2007 commissioning goals will still be met. (next slide)

Controls Installation Controls is preparing for January checkout. Magnet power supplies, vacuum controls, installed in racks and tested. Racks now installed in place. Linac cable plant phase 2 installation is underway. Network connection from S-20 is installed, ready. Wire scanner controls tested & calibrated, laser optics movers demo’d, OTR/YAG screen video capture ready, BPM/LLRF digitizer boards on order, … Coordination with hardware installation, Laser commissioning, and Controls checkout is being planned for January.

Controls - PPS The Personnel Protection System has been a concern. It is now in hand. Hardware installation is underway. The review process with the SLAC Radiation Safety Committee: Programmable Logic Controller design conditionally approved! The Committee wants to see the certification procedure. Beam loss and shielding designs approved. Beam Containment System approved 10/19.

Injector Accelerator Readiness Review Safety Assessment Document Draft LCLS SAD for Injector Commissioning under internal review. Operating procedures are being written with Accelerator Department Operations. Commissioning LCLS Commissioning Workshop October 9-11 Includes a Commissioning Readiness Review. Accelerator Readiness Review (ARR) LCLS ARR for Injector Commissioning scheduled for October 31st.

Undulator Systems Design Quadrupole Order placed, vendor designs, 1st article 2/07 Fixed Support/Mover Final Design Review - September 13/14 Go ahead given for production. Beam Finder Wire Final Design Review - September 20, 2006 Go ahead given for production of BFW, except wire card. RF Beam Position Monitor Design Review - October 4 Go ahead given for production of bodies. Vacuum Chamber Design Review - September 27/28 The development is behind schedule and near the Critical Path. The "4-weld" design is proceeding full steam. An alternate design effort has begun at SLAC, will not dilute the "4-weld" effort. Should the “4-weld” design run into problems the alternate design will be ready to be adopted.

2007 Installation Progress The design of L2, L3 and the second bunch compressor is well underway. The design of the LTU and beam dump areas are also moving. There are many common components with Inj/Linac, already designed. The Undulator installation schedule has been developed.

Cost and Schedule Performance Injector: SPI=0.95, CPI=0.89 We have been very cautious with the production of the RF Gun and the L0a and L0b Accelerating structures. This has led to schedule delay and cost increases in these areas. Linac: SPI=0.96, CPI=1.05 Design of Linac magnets, diagnostics and RF components have been very synergistic with Injector, leading to savings.

There is little new RF hardware to fabricate for 2007 L1 and X-band are complete.

6 Month Look-Ahead Injector installation will be complete and Commissioning will be underway. A detailed schedule for the 2007 Linac downtime and, A detailed installation schedule for the LTU, Und., and Dump will be in hand. The production of components for the these areas will follow a schedule monitored weekly. 50% of Undulator magnets will be RFI. The Undulator Vacuum Chambers will be in production. The SAD will be under revision for the full LCLS, and an LCLS ARR will be scheduled.

Conclusion The downtime installation is underway. We got off to a good start. Not all parts are in hand. Injector installation will delay commissioning. The 2007 commissioning goals will still be met. The Undulator vacuum chamber is still in the design/prototype stage. Near the critical path. No show-stoppers but performance is not yet proven. Alternative design under consideration.
