Please get out a piece of loose leaf paper for today’s Notes Name 9/16/2015 Stats – 1 Sampling Methods
Vocabulary in Today’s Lesson Convenience Sampling Voluntary Response Sampling Simple Random Sampling Stratified Sampling Cluster Sampling Systematic Random Sampling Observational Study Survey Population Sample Parameter Statistic Probability Sampling Non-Probability Sampling
Parameter – true value of a population variable. - based on data collected from the whole population Statistic - estimate of a population variable - based on data collected from a sample of the population
Sampling Method – how subjects are selected from population for a sample Probability sample Non-Probability Samples Probability known - Probability not known Good for analysis - Cheap, easy, and fast All parts of population have a chance of being included in sample
2 Main Types of Non-Probability Sampling Voluntary Response Sample – Subjects self select Convenience Sample – Subjects are easy to reach
4 Main Types of Probability Sampling - Simple Random Sample - Stratified Sample - Cluster Sample - Systematic Random Sample
Simple Random Sample – Population of N, sample size of n, all possible samples are equally likely to be selected
Stratified Sample – Population classified into homogenous groups, and subjects are randomly selected from each group
Cluster Sample – Population divided into heterogeneous groups, and subjects are selected from a few of the clusters
Systematic Random Sample – Select every kth element of the population
