Today’s Tips! Understanding SAISD’s Technology Preparing for Student Use of Technology Accessing Student Logins and Passwords Office 365 Fun and Useful Digital Ideas To Enhance Your Curriculum! Today, I’m going to share with you these points to help you understand the SAISD technology system, in a broad sense, so you will understand some of the steps that must be taken to get students ready to use technology. Of course, there will be a fun part, too, when we can look at Office 365 and discuss some of the active and great ways to use these in the curriculum.

Most classroom teachers see computer labs or a computer station and think, “that’s technology”, and it is, but there is so much more to a school system of technology. Our technology is more like a wheel with all parts turning to create student success. As the classroom teacher, you drive this wheel to keep our students moving with technology! Understanding the parts will help you operate within the whole. We have a data division, a business services division, networking and infrastructure services, internet, security, and communications technicians, operations folks, instructional technology, and our hardware and software experts. Over all of these divisions and your campus and classroom are the federal and state laws, local policies, and budget guidelines that outline our scope of use. In particular, there will be 2 federal regulations that will impact how and when you work with students and technology. We’ll talk about those as briefly as possible and only as they impact you and your students’ actions.

Preparing for Student Use of Technology According to Federal regulations, “we” must appropriately filter and supervise student use of electronic systems as is appropriate to their level and capacity. Therefore… Individual logins are necessary so the District may apply appropriate filtering and provide suitable resources within our system & budget capabilities. The first federal law that directly impacts you and your students regards supervision and access to online resources. According to Federal regulations, “we” must appropriately filter and supervise student use of electronic systems as is appropriate to their level and capacity. The District complies with this with the use of individual logins. Each level of login – student, teacher, guest- has the right permissions applied to it. And teachers, guess what…the lowest level of access would be which one? …. ….. Guest or generic campus accounts, so avoid using those.

Professional Preparation for Student Use of Technology According to more Federal regulations, teachers must Receive professional training annually for keeping students safe …. online. Deliver 2 lessons to all students before allowing them access to school electronic systems. This training is given at the campus level every year. For more information, please visit the training course at https://saisdecampus.remote-learner.net/course/view.php?id=6 The second regulation that affects your classroom and kids deals squarely with online safety. This Federal reg states that teachers must receive annual training in online safety, and that students must annually receive 2 lessons on this topic BEFORE BEFORE BEFORE they may use computers and online services. SAISD works within this regulation by providing the Cybersafety training to teachers online. This training is usually arranged by the campus administrators. The training also contains an extensive library of Cybersafety lessons for the teachers to use with students. Again, the campus administrators usually design the when, wheres, and hows of the Cybersafety student lessons so that all students receive training. Remember, all of this Cybersafety training is supposed to be completed before students use technology in a school. This would impact your classroom and currriculum choices.

Understanding Student Logins All students (K-12) have individual, District-assigned logins and passwords. Students must be told what those logins are and how to use them. Teachers provide the information. In a school district with 54,000 students, we need a little help getting information to each student about their logins. Students are told what their logins are and how to use them *by teachers *after Cybersafety training This means you need to keep your eyes and ears “peeped” open for campus rollout of the training, so you can roll out login information to your group of students.

Understanding Student Logins THE LOGIN THE PASSWORD All student logins follow this formula: First name + last initial + variation of 1000 @ live.saisd.net Example: joed1006@live.saisd.net Initial passwords follow this formula: ID # + Campus # Example: 123456001 This information will help classroom teachers work with the student logins and passwords once you have them. It’s very helpful to understand the logic that created our student logins and passwords.

Locating Student Information Student Account Manager iData Portal We said earlier that teachers will be distributing the logins and passwords after Cybersafety training, right? Right. Where do teachers find that information? You can choose two different systems to retrieve it. The first is the Student Account Manager. The SAM is simply a window into a database of student login information. Teachers log into SAM (the same way they do their email) and have instant access to rosters of their current students with login information. SAM also has three important toggles that teachers use. Activate account Reset Password Disable account The second tool for login information is iData Portal. If classroom teachers are comfortable using this database, they may view student login account information on the demographics panel for each student. nova.saisd.net > SAM Saisd.net > Employees > iData

Activating K-7 Accounts Student Account Manager Federal Compliance Teachers, After you receive your annual Digital Citizenship training, and after your students have received 2 lessons in this, you must activate K-7 accounts in the Student Account Manager. It’s simply a matter of hitting the “Activate” link, but it is important. Remember the federal law that states we can’t let students use online systems and resources until after they’ve received Cybersafety training? This regulation is so fierce that the District is required to keep K-7 (think of the age of these students) accounts inactive until the training has occurred. The District has made it brilliantly easy to accomplish this. Once your campus has performed the Cybersafety training to teachers and students, the designated teacher will log into the Student Account Manager and click on the “activate accounts” option. Ta-da! Pretty impressive for a district with 54,000 students. By designated teacher, we mean this is a campus and principal decision. It may be the most logical decision for the campus to use second period teachers, homeroom, science, etc. Again, this is a matter of keeping your ears open for the right information from your administrators. Still, you may need to do this for new or transferring students, so keep this in mind.

All of this is built into the service at no additional cost. Exchange Online supports the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync protocol. Exchange ActiveSync provides synchronization of mailbox data between mobile phones and Exchange Online, so users can access their email, calendar, contacts, and tasks on the go. Exchange ActiveSync is supported by a wide range of mobile devices, including Microsoft Windows Mobile® and Windows Phone, Nokia E and N series devices, Palm devices, Apple iPhone and iPad, and certain Android phones. Implementation of the specific features of Exchange ActiveSync varies by device and manufacturer. With Exchange ActiveSync, you can enforce security policies, such as PIN lock, on the devices that connect to your Exchange Online environment. In the event that a mobile device is lost or stole, users or administrators can remotely wipe the device back to its factory settings, from OWA. The heart of the social experience in SharePoint 2013 is the newsfeed – it’s a summary of all your social interactions from your microblogs and community conversations, to the sites, content, and people you follow.
