Oakridge Elementary School Standards-Based Progress Reporting November 13, 2018

What are the Virginia Standards? In every public school in the Commonwealth of Virginia, including APS: The Standards define what students should know and be able to do at each grade-level. The Standards are used as a reference point for planning teaching and learning programs, and for assessing student progress.

Example Progress Report

Standards-Based Progress Reporting Standards-based progress reporting is a method that allows teachers, students, and families to clearly communicate specific areas of strength and need. It gives clear and concise answers to students’ questions, “What have I learned? What do I need to improve?”

What is Standards-Based Progress Monitoring? An indicator of students’ progress toward learning a specific concept as outlined in the Virginia Standards of Learning. Supported by our standards- based instruction and assessment throughout the entire school day.

Why the change? To provide specific feedback of student progress. To support student ownership of learning in the environment. To motivate students intrinsically to increase their understanding and application of concepts.

What will the Standards-Based Progress Report look like?

What are the performance descriptors? Exceeds Standard: Student consistently demonstrates higher-order thinking in the application of the skills mastered under the Virginia Standard. Meets Standard: Student consistently demonstrates mastery of Virginia Standard. Developing Mastery: Student is in the process of mastering (e.g., the student is learning) Virginia Standard. Insufficient Evidence: The teacher does not have evidence to determine a student’s mastery level for the Virginia Standard.
