These Red Letters: Looking at the Sermon on the Mount Part 2: The World Around You

Review: The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus’ central teaching for the life of discipleship with Him. He wants His new Kingdom people to be known not just for what they don’t do, but why they don’t, how they do instead, and how to lead others into His life.

These people who embrace the ETHOS of Jesus end up having a distinct character and lifestyle that is meant to bless the world in general while serving as a conduit for the goodness and love of God in it.

Jesus takes familiar commandments regarding how His people were to behave in the world generally and makes them personal and specific to each heart and life.

Jesus continues to draw the difference between His kind of righteousness and simplistic legal rightness.

Jesus makes a distinction of relationships in the world and His people’s standards in those relationships: Family: Love and Protect Neighbors: Love, Respect, Humility Enemies: Love, Serve, Pray

Jesus final instruction for behavior in the world is that the kind of love and life that He intends for us is not meant to be a show. It is meant to be quiet, genuine, and natural.
