Today: Final reading of Unit 1! 3 pages, four questions. About how political parties nominate candidates. But first… Let’s talk about something controversial.

The Electoral College What is it? It’s not a school, it’s a meeting. 538 electors meet after the general election to choose the president and VP. To win election, candidates need 270 electors.

In 2000, Al Gore ran against George W. Bush for president. Bush got: 50,456,002 votes Gore got: 50,999,897 votes Who won?

Answer: Bush WHY?

Answer: “Winner takes all” National popular vote doesn’t choose president. Chosen state by state in “winner take all” elections that tell the electors who to vote for. If you win a state, you win ALL of that state’s Electoral College votes.

Bush lost popular vote, but won electoral college. Bush: 271 electoral votes Gore: 266 electoral votes

Riddle (think, pair, share): If advisories were like states in the electoral college… Could a candidate for Student Government get more votes than anyone else -- and still lose? How?

Homework for tomorrow: “Where do I vote?” online (get assignment when done reading today) Finish terms.
