Senior Leader Orientation Course GENERAL DAVE AND DAWN GOLDFEIN 21ST CHIEF OF STAFF AND SPOUSE

Congratulations! Congrats to you and yours spouses! Welcome to the Club of They Most of us joined for a variety of reasons but we stay because of the people and the mission. Now is our opportunity to give back. We know many of you but others we don’t. Opportunity to get to know each other. Dawn and I want to share some experiences to help fill your toolbag, kick off this SLOC course, and hear what is on your mind. You are part of a select group of 200: 130 (AD)/54 (Reserve)/19 (Guard) 181 = Total number of SES in the Department of the Air Force

Senior Leader Team Dave -- Our families exhibit a special kind of courage when they endure the long hours, the separations, and the hardships so common to our service. Dave – I could not do this job without her. Dawn – introduce us as a couple and family Dawn – this is what “senior leader team” means There for each other Strive for balance Keep each other humble Divide and conquer (mission and people) Have fun Mentoring … raise our replacements (commanders courses)

Dave’s Sandbox Up Down and Sideways Up – your bosses Sideways – your peers and partners Down – the Airmen you are privileged to serve Congress International Teammates (NDS focus … mil to mil relationships) American people and the press … comes with the rank

Dawn’s Sandbox Have a choice … no expectations. Hoping you will get involved. Understand full time careers or AD themselves. Finding passion is what matters … for me: Children (MCEC) Key Spouses – mentoring Representing the USAF and helping with teambuilding in our home Making relationships with international friends Dave – importance of Dawn in building relationships as CFACC

Expectations Impeccable Character Servant Leadership Ownership Appropriately Decisive Collaborative Team Builders Fit to Lead Connected Up Down and Sideways Up – your bosses Sideways – your peers and partners Down – the Airmen you are privileged to serve Congress International Teammates (NDS focus … mil to mil relationships) American people and the press … comes with the rank

Challenge or Opportunity? See challenges as opportunities Senior Airman Kevin Greene, **You reenlisted him in the office in Nov 2017 Lost leg after motorcycle accident One of the first single amputee Airmen returned to duty in Air Force Reserve Command Returned to duty after two-and-a-half-year fight, including three rejection letters and an in-person medical evaluation board Outside of military service, Greene is a Lead Registered Behavior Technician, working with low-level functioning autistic children. He is also a basketball coach for inner-city kids. Space Force as an opportunity Joint Stars as an opportunity Readiness recovery and NDS as opportunities Dawn – story about AF spouse of the year.

Have Fun Why would anyone want to be us if we are not showing them how to have fun? Take time for ourselves as well as them … free them to take leave Story of CORONA and Rae

Find Balance Dawn – not a math equation. Doesn’t always work out. Sometimes AF wins … sometimes family wins Family … Air Force … Couple … Self

Sacred Duty Dave – never forget where our Airmen come from … reason you are going next week to Lackland and a BMT graduation as the last thing you will do. Test question --- hopeful to hopeless. How do we make this the richest experience. Inspirational leadership is our only retention tool. Dawn – just visited SrA Justin Day and his wife Aubrey. Wounded in Afghanistan from an IED. On his birthday they learned they are going to have a baby boy. Patriotic family from Oregon … talk through family These are the incredible Airmen we are privileged to serve as a leadership team
