11.2 Speed and Velocity
Warm-up 1. What is displacement of a man who walks 4 blocks north, 3 blocks west, and 4 blocks south? 2. What is the displacement of a car that drives 14 meters forward, 6 meters backwards, 1 meter forward, and 8 meters backwards?
Objective #1: Motion Motion-A change in position over a certain period of time.
Objective #2: Speed Speed-Ratio of distance moved by an object to the amount of time it took to move. Ex. 14 m/s, 2.5 cm/min Speed=Distance Time
Objective #2: What is Speed? Average Speed- Expresses speed during the entire duration for a trip Instantaneous Speed-Expresses speed at any given moment.
Objective #3: Calculating Speed A car travels 240 kilometers in 3 hours. What is the speed of the car? 2. A train travels 45 miles in the first 30 minutes of a trip, 110 miles for the next 120 minutes, and 20 miles in the last 30 minutes of the trip. What is the train’s average speed? 3. The speed of a cruise ship is 50 km/hr. How far will the ship travel in 14 hours?
Objective #4: What is velocity? Velocity-Vector that describes speed in a given direction Ex. 24 km/hr west, 10 m/sec to the left Velocity changes if speed and/or direction changes.
Exit Slip Is velocity a scalar or vector? Is speed a scalar or vector? What is the average speed of a jet plane that flies 7200 km in 9 hours? How long does it take a car to travel 45 miles at a speed of 20 miles/hr?
Warm-up In a time-distance graph, what does the slope of the graph represent? In which segment is speed the fastest? In which segment is speed the slowest?
