“Parent Swap”: Bridging Leaders to Success Ms. Terrica Mack & Mrs. Miche'l Godwin  5th  Grade Princeton Alternative Elementary School Ms. Cynthia Ward, Principal

TOPICS TONIGHT INCLUDE: TONIGHT’ S OBJECTIVE is designed to help reduce some of the “nerves and concerns” over the summer activities assigned for the incoming fifth-grade students and to help involve parents in this transition process. TOPICS TONIGHT INCLUDE: Rigor, Relevance & Relationship Common Core Standards The Leader in Me Parameters Turn off anything that rings, dings, or sings Focus on the kids and their learning Be willing and open to this MAJOR change Ask questions and listen to what everyone has to say

Jobs that don’t yet exist, using . . . Rigor, Relevance & Relationship We are preparing students for: Jobs that don’t yet exist, using . . . Technology that has not yet been invented in order to . . . Solve problems that we don’t even know are problems.

Rigor is… Scaffolding thinking Planning for thinking Assessing thinking about content Recognizing the level of thinking students demonstrate Managing the teaching/ learning level for the desired thinking level A relevant lesson answers… Why am I learning it? What am I Learning? How will I use it?

What Parents should know GO MATH is used everyday (textbook and online resources) Use of rich and challenging math content Follow the 8 mathematical principals Basic facts must be learned BEFORE the 1st day of school to be prepared for grade level assignments

Student’s summer academic expectations Read everyday between 20 min. to an hour in order to complete summer requirements. Utilize web-based links such as stride academy for learning review. Learn and practice multiplication facts! Summer Reading List Holes – by Louis Sachar Quiz first week of school Bonus points for those who join summer reading program and bring evidence
