Presentation transcript:

Neuroglial Cells

Neuroglial Cells in the CNS Astrocytes Star-shaped cells Found between neurons & blood vessels where they provide support and hold structures together Respond to injury of brain tissue Forms special type of scar tissue that fills spaces & closes gaps in the CNS Helps regulate ions & nutrients in tissues

Oligodendrocytes Form myelin in the brain & spinal cord This myelin serves as insulation around the axon that speeds up impulses through the nervous system.

Microglia Small Scattered throughout the CNS Support neurons & phagocytize bacterial debris and cellular debris

Ependyma form the inner lining of the central canal(extends down through the spinal cord) Form inner linings that enclose ventricles in the brain Form a porous layer through which substances diffuse freely between the interstitial fluid of the brain tissues & the cerebrospinal fluid within the ventricles of the brain

Neuroglial Cells in the PNS Schwann Cells- form myelin that wrap around the axons of peripheral neurons
