Welcome to the Wonderful World of Polygons

What We Hope You Learn by the End of this Presentation: What is a polygon? What are the different types of polygons? What are congruent polygons? What are similar polygons? What are some examples of these polygons?

A polygon is a plane (flat) figure having three or more sides. What Is a Polygon? A polygon is a plane (flat) figure having three or more sides. Types of Polygons: Regular polygons are special. All the sides and angles are congruent. Congruent means the same in size, shape or measure.

Regular Polygons A square is a regular polygon. All the sides and all the angles are congruent.

Regular Polygons This is a regular pentagon. All five sides and all five angles are congruent.

Regular Polygons This is a not a regular pentagon. It has five sides but they are not all congruent.

Let's Play a Polygon Matching Game: Take a minute to match the name up with the figure . . . pentagon triangle octagon quadrilateral hexagon heptagon

What are Congruent Polygons? Congruent polygons are polygons that have the same size and the same shape. fact: Congruent shapes have all their sides and angles congruent. fact:

Let's See Some Congruent Polygons: Notice how the second figures have the same shape and size of the first – they match exactly.

What are SimilarPolygons? Similar polygons are polygons that have the same shape but not the same size. fact: Similar shapes have corresponding parts that are proportional (ex. all corresponding parts are 2 times as large, or ½ as large.) fact:

Let's See Some Similar Polygons: Notice how the second figures have the same shape but the sizes are different. All of the corresponding sides are the same proportion.

Non-Similar Polygons: Notice how the second figures have the same shape but the sizes are different AND all of the corresponding sides ARE NOT the same proportion.

The End!
