What do the changes in the curriculum look like? Huge change in expectation across the curriculum. Objectives moved down year groups so children are expected to acquire knowledge earlier This includes some Year 7 and 8 material being moved into the KS2 curriculum. So how does it look?

Assessment Without Levels

Assessment without levels: The Rationale Why get rid of levels? Levels were a best fit model that didn’t distinguish between two children with the same level. They may both be a 4B but have vastly different strengths and areas for development. With an objective based system we can say whether a child has met year group expectations or whether they are working towards or indeed, have exceeded expectations. The new assessments will be based around teacher assessments against these objectives in combination with SATs tests at the end of Key stages 1 and 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q5vrBXFpm0

Assessment at the End of Year 2 and Year 6 What guidance have we received from the Government? The New Curriculum 2014 tells us requirements for the end of Year 2 and Year 6. Sample papers for KS1 and KS2 SATs were released in July 2014 before the beginning of the last academic year. These were useful but last year SATs were still using levels. So this academic year is the first year without levels. Sample papers didn’t tell us what the ‘expected’ child looked like. There was still a lot of confusion around how we were meant to judge the expected outcomes at the beginning of this year. On the 8th March 2016 exemplars and a ‘Clarification document’ were released by the DfE.

Scaled Scores – What are they? A score based around 100. If the children achieve 100 they are at the expected level. Scaled score will range from 85 - 115 The scaled score is based on a test score. Scaled scores used for Maths, SPAG and Reading tests. A test ‘raw score’ is converted into a Scaled Score.

Which is right? DfE - ‘If the guidelines are followed there will be consistency.’

What about the other year groups? What guidance has been given for assessing between key stages? None. Schools are free to use their own assessment techniques to ensure that children are on track.

So what are We doing? We are using School Pupil Tracker Online (SPTO) They have divided the objectives into Year group objectives. To do this they have used guidelines produced by the Nation Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) and the National Centre for Excellence in Mathematics (NCETM) These organisations have broken the curriculum into year group expectations which SPTO have loaded onto their website. We make judgements against these objectives over the course of the year as we travel through the curriculum. We make judgements at the end of a lesson, to inform planning, at the end of a unit of work and at assessment points. There is a combination of formative and summative assessment which informs our judgements.

How are we reporting to you? Based on these judgements we will be able to say if your child is working: Above Inline Below The expected level.

Reports Continued… Regardless of the year group expectations your children have made fantastic progress this year. This will be reflected in the teacher’s comments so please read them carefully. Also take into account what was said at parents’ evening meetings and most importantly what your children think about their progress.
