The Christmas Stories: God John 1

God has always been about the restoration of His people, at no time in the Biblical narrative is the promise of redemption, rescue, and reconciliation forgotten or neglected to be mentioned. Generation after generation of the Hebrew history recognizes the next link of the chain stretching from the prophecy of Genesis 3 to its fulfillment on the cross.

One after another, each link in the promise-chain proves themselves to be incapable of being its conclusion. Each one is faithful in some aspect of the promise, but none can stand up to the problem that is present within them from their first day of life on earth. Until Jesus.

The incarnation is the second most powerful act of love we witness in the story of Scripture. In the incarnation, God has taken on limitations- time, space, chemistry- all the things that a body physically restricts for Who has always existed without resistance.

Two things bookend all of Christian faith: incarnation and resurrection. Theology, doctrine, dos, and don’ts are worthless if we are not captivated by the humility, wisdom, beauty, and love of these two events that are announced for our life’s sake.

The ultimate act of love we witness is that God is willing to lay down even this, to not simply be bound by flesh and bone, but to have that flesh and bone broken, abused, and life ended by those He is far greater than. In laying down His life He was given right to take it back up again and invite everyone else to take it up with Him.
