Indo-US Science and Technology Sharing a Common Vision for the New Millennium Indo-US Science and Technology Forum is established on March 21, 2000 to facilitate and promote the interaction, in India and the United States, of government, academia, and industry in science and technology. There are several other agreements in place for S&T collaboration and new agreements are being discussed. http://www.indousstf.org/ 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration Making a Difference 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

India HEP Collaboration in world Indian scientists have been collaborating at CERN for decades. Its participation and contribution to LHC has given India an Associate Member State status with CERN. India has build accelerator and detector components for LHC/CMS. India also participates in experiments at KEK and DESY. 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

20 Years of Indo-US HEP Collaboration Indian Scientists have collaborated in a High Energy Physics Experiments from early 80’s at Fermilab and other US laboratories. At Fermilab the collaboration started with Fixed Target Experiment and has now extended to D0 and Accelerator. Argonne National Laboratory has collaborated with India on Superconducting cavity development. Six Institutes from India collaborates on the STAR experiment at BNL. Many US laboratories have worked with Indian laboratories Indians are on staff of every US laboratories, universities and major US industries. 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

Fermilab and India Collaboration 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

International Linear Collider International Linear Collider (ILC) would be build only with the collaboration of the international HEP community. US has inspiration to build ILC on its soil. India has its inspiration to build several accelerators for scientific and medical R&D. There are accelerator projects in India and US that can benefit from collaborative R&D. 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

US HEP scientists visited India Nov 03. Interaction Meeting on Linear Collider and Neutrino Physics, New Delhi. Visit to Center of Advanced Technology, Indore Visit to TIFR Meetings with Prof. Ramamurthy and Dr. Kakodkar. India’s potential and several areas of collaboration is possible. We submitted a ~30 pages long report to DOE on our very positive visit. 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

Accelerator R&D Collaboration An Indo-US WG on Accelerator R&D was formed to discuss the areas of collaboration. Members: Dr. D. D. Bhawalkar, CAT Dr. N. K. Mondal, TIFR Dr. M. G. Karmarker, CAT Dr. S. Krishnagopal, CAT Dr. A. Roy, NSC Dr. D. Burke, SLAC Dr. S. Chattopadhyay, Jlab Dr. D. Michael, CalTech Dr. Joe Rogers, Cornell Dr. Shekhar Mishra, FNAL We realized that the area of collaboration should go beyond accelerators to include Physics, detector and computing. Committee member represents the areas of growing interest like neutrino physics, SCRF, electron machines etc. India will return to ICFA. 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration Neutrino Experiment Collaboration on present neutrino experiment with a goal of collaboration and construction of future neutrino experiment in USA and India. MINOS Off-Axis India’s INO US studies on Future neutrino physics (Indian participation) 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

Accelerator Commissioning Training future accelerator scientists Scientific exchange Accelerator school SPEAR commissioning with a goal on US accelerator scientists participating in Indus-II commissioning. Collaboration between Light Source (ALS, APS) 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

New Accelerator Projects Design and construction of new accelerator projects like Linac Coherent Light Source, Rare Isotope Accelerator Super-conducting Proton Linac India has plans to build similar accelerator A collaborative R&D and construction would benefit both countries. 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration Super-conducting RF US SCRF Interests (plus LC) ANL RIA, FEL BNL e-cool, eRHIC, AGS upgrade Cornell ERL FNAL Proton Driver, FNPL JLab CEBAF upgrade, SCRF Center, FEL LANL SCRF R&D LBNL LUX MIT FEL MSU RIA ORNL SNS (SLAC LC) During our visit to India we learned that India has growing interest in SCRF accelerator technology. A SMTF collaboration is being formed in the United States to build and test state of the art SCRF cavities for these accelerators. We are in discussion with DESY on this collaboration. Other countries (including India) are welcomed to collaborate. 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

International Linear Collider ILC is a new era for International collaboration on HEP. No one country can build it on its own. International Linear Collider by its organization planning is an International project. ILC organization at Phase-I and II would require our international collaborators to be convinced that they will be “real collaborators”. US with its desire to host LC is taking a active role. Linear Collider design Industrial production of its hardware 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration GRID Computing US laboratories are actively participating in the development and deployment of grid technology for high energy physics research. LHC experiments: GRID Computing USA India India has considerable IT resources Design and construction of future accelerator and detectors will require GRID computing. 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

Linear Collider Detector Design US Effort on Linear Collider detector design is growing. HEP collaboration beyond D0 Fermilab and SLAC are taking leading role in the design of SID detector for ILC. Simulation and analysis software Detector Design Prototype construction and testing. 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration Direct scientific collaboration between India and USA have been beneficial to both countries. Glitches: VISA Proposal for scientific exchange through US and Indian DOE/NSF and DAE/DST. ICFA, ACFA, US and Indian scientists attending each others meeting. 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration

Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration Summary In last two years we have come a long way in Indo-US collaboration of Accelerator R&D. Funding agencies in both countries are positive on these scientific International collaboration. US has suggested several areas where India can collaborate. International Linear Collider We need to continue these discussion to soon have a meeting between DOE/NSF and DAE/DST. 8/5/2004 Indo-US WG on Accelerator Collaboration
