Self Esteem and Self Awareness (Head up your page with the date and this heading and then rule a line underneath it.)

Definitions: Write the definitions for the following terms, write your definitions using full sentences and be as specific as possible: Self Awareness Self Esteem

Self awareness Self esteem What you know about yourself; your self knowledge. You know that you have certain strengths and weaknesses, reflecting on and understanding these helps you understand yourself. Self esteem How you feel about what you know about yourself. Do you feel good about your strengths and accepting of your weaknesses? Are you ashamed of your perceived weaknesses? Your self esteem has to do with how you feel about yourself.

Perceived self vs. Ideal self Your perceived self is the way you currently see yourself. Your ideal self is who you would like to be. It is who you wish you were / the person you desire to be. Your self esteem is good when your perceived self is the same or is close to your ideal self. It is bad when your perceived self is far removed from your ideal self. Note: Your ideal self is always changing as you progress through life.

What / who tells us what is ideal What / who tells us what is ideal? What influences your sense of your ideal self? Write a list of everything that you can think of.

Influences on self esteem Parents Siblings Friends Peers Teachers Sports coaches People we look up to Religious leaders Community Media TV Magazines Music Internet Facebook and other social networking sites

Our concept of what is ‘ideal’ changes over time… Example: It used to be viewed as ideal to be thrifty and careful with your money. This was respected and people strived to be seen this way. Today it is viewed as ideal to be flashy and careless with your money. The more assets you have the better and many people aim to be able to be extravagant with money.

The changing concept of beauty: Our changing concept of beauty... Venus of Willendorf (27,000 BCE), Boticelli's Primavera (1500s), Twiggy (1960s)

The media and your self esteem… Youtube clips to illustrate this point: Dove evolution - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46U Extreme retouch / make-over - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcVTLyefWKw&feature=related
