What Are Fossils? Lesson 3 Big Shells: Ammonites were animals similar to squids with shells. They lived millions of years ago. The largest ammonite fossil.

Natural Selection occurs even today - ex: pesticides, some insects have traits that protect them from pesticides. They survive and pass on their traits,
Fossils and the Rock Record
Fossils and the Rock Record The Rock Record  Rocks record geological events and changing life forms of the past  Planet Earth was formed 4.6 billion.

Remains of once living organisms. Form from decay and are buried by sediment. Sediment hardens into rock and preserves the shape of the organisms.
The Fossil Record. 1. Fossils are the remains of organisms that lived in a previous geologic time. 2. The study of these fossils is called paleontology.

Can you tell what kinds of animals made these prints and what probably happened?

Fossil Formation

Clues in Rocks Fossil formation sedimentary rock. sediments build; cover the organism’s remains. Minerals replace the organic matter or fill the empty pore spaces of the organism Organism decomposes and leaves behind an impression of its body. Classification of Fossil Types Trace Fossil -any indirect evidence left by an organism.

Fossil Record Mystery

Evidence: Fossil Record en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Eopraptor_sketch5.png © World Health Org. Presenter notes: All the pieces of evidence that we have discussed so far point to the inter-relatedness of all living things and their evolution from a single common ancestor. However, perhaps the most compelling piece of evidence in support of evolution is the fossil record itself. The fossil record shows a sequence from simple bacteria in the oldest rocks through to more complicated organisms like dinosaurs and humans in much younger rocks. It shows that different species arose at different times and, as we see in the next slide, in many cases there are clear transitions from one species, or group, to another.   Background note: A companion talk on the History of Life can be downloaded from the Your Planet Earth website: http://www.earth4567.com/talks/life.html © NASA origins bacteria complex cells dinosaurs humans The fossil record shows a sequence from simple bacteria to more complicated organisms through time and provides the most compelling evidence for evolution.
