Psych 222 Feminist/Culturally Competent Practice Overview of assessment interview Exploring heritage and history Working in context

Overview of Contextual Assessment Interview What brings you to therapy? What kind of support do you have in coping with this situation? Home? Work? Family? Friends? Culture? What are some of the main challenges you face in coping with this situation? Health? Home? Work? Family? Friends? Culture? What were things like for you in the past? As a child? As a teen? Before the problem began? Are there times you have felt afraid or scared of someone, or something that was happening to you? Are there times you have felt unable to cope? If you could make the current situation better, what would it look like?

Exploring Heritage & History How do gov’t policies affect clinical concerns for immigrants? What does it mean if we “go beyond” racial categories in identifying/discussing ethnicity? How can we acknowledge/honor/discuss the complexity of racial/ethnic heritage beyond broad categories? How can we acknowledge/honor/discuss immigration experience in clinical settings? What is the role of historical trauma in client concerns?

Working in Context What role does policy play in interethnic strife? How do cultural stereotypes contribute to clinical problems? What role does internalized oppression play in interethnic strife? How can cultural pride be fostered in ways that support individual and community development? How can we counteract racial antagonisms as therapists? How can we best work with clients whose value systems differ from our own?
