Introducing the Computer Club’s 710 Series

Who Call me Bruce. I will conduct most of the sessions but others are welcome to contribute. My background: About 30 years in I.T. in Fortune 500 environment About 20 years independent consulting – database technologies 15 years member of Board of Directors of largest user group in New England.

WHAT Since arriving in this community in June, 2017 I have been impressed by the club, especially the availability of one-on-one help sessions, the various workshops, and the bi-weekly sessions on applications. What I haven’t seen is what I would call generic “how a computer works” sessions that when understood provide a foundation to build upon. So these sessions will be, for the most part, non-specific as to PC, Mac, tablet, smartphone, Windows, OS-X, Android etc. In fact, there are no pre-requisites of any kind. We are going to start with a clean slate.

The White Elephant in the Room Notice the white cane? For 12 years I have been legally blind – Low Vision With the lights on in this room, to me it is like candle light’ Once the room lights are dimmed for the projector, raising hand to ask question just won’t work, so I encourage you to just SPEAK UP if you have a question.

Inspiration for this series of sessions About 25 years ago my wife and I bought a Saturn. The Service Manager invited us to a session on basic owner maintenance. Coffee and donuts were offered. We went, of course. He covered the fluids under the hood. Engine Coolant Engine Oil Transmission Fluid Brake Fluid Windshield Washer Fluid

He demonstrated the proper way to use battery jumper cables. On the lift he showed The oil and transmission drain plugs. How to test tire tread for wear using a penny He showed where to find the scissors jack, spare tire and lug wrench. He demonstrated changing a tire. As the grand finale, they triggered an air bag taken from a wreck. What did I learn? Know the 800 number for AAA. And …

… where to pour the 10W30

The 710 series of sessions will “look under the hood” of technology, be it PC, Mac, Tablet, SmartPhone or perhaps ‘other stuff’. The goal is to develop a basic understanding of how things work, and have fun while doing it.

710 Sessions First Thursday of Every Month 10:00 AM to about 11:30 AM Redwood Commons Theater / Media Room
