Let’s panic about citations Rebecca halpern, vac librarian Usc school of social work

1. The specifics don’t matter 2. You need to learn them anyway

Why should I care?

What is referencing? Referencing is the way to acknowledge that many of the ideas and facts in your paper came from someone else.

Referencing does: Informs Demonstrates Separates 4. Reinforces 5. Acknowledges

You must reference when: Using a direct quote Paraphrasing an article, idea, or concept Providing a statistic or fact Making a general statement or claim that requires evidence

Which of these gets a citation? Claim that poverty rates are increasing Putting an author’s ideas into your own words Statement that Freud is the founder of psychoanalysis An image you found in Google Your analysis and interpretation of another’s argument Characteristics of a client, from their file

Quoting vs. paraphrasing While related to learning outcomes, instead of being a task-based assessment measure, threshold concepts are “gateways for student understanding that once traversed, transform the student's perspective” (Townsend, Brunetti, & Hofer, 2011, p. 855). Threshold concepts are different from learning outcomes. Where as learning outcomes measure if a student can complete a task, threshold concepts change the way students approach the discipline (Townsend, Brunetti, & Hofer, 2011).

Formats! Social Work APA Guide: http://libguides.usc.edu/APA-citation-style Purdue OWL: http://owl.English.purdue.edu/owl APA Style Blog: http://blog.apastyle.org/

The frankenreference Author or content creator Author’s name or name of agency/organization Date of publication No date? Use n.d. Title of item What’s it called? Publication information For journals, it’s the journal title, volume, and issue For books, it’s the publisher For websites, it’s the URL In-text citations are always simply author and date (with page number, if you’re directly quoting).

Let’s try it! Provide a citation – in-text and reference list – for the NASW Code of Ethics that you got online. Provide a citation – in-text and reference list – for data retrieved from the Census Bureau. Provide a citation – in-text and reference list – for asynchronous course material. Provide a citation – in-text and reference list – for a newspaper article you retrieved online.
