The Worship of the Samaritans 2 Kings 17:24-41

Their religion was characterized by… An Imperfect Fear (32-34, 41) Form over substance (26-27, 33-34) Compromise (41a) Fear was caused by lions (25-26). Would not have considered God without them. (Fear, but not fear. Note: 34) Proper fear (awesome reverence) causes us to turn AWAY from evil to serve him alone! (Matthew 10:28; Acts 10:34-35) No true devotion, just ritual to avoid judgment This was never acceptable to God, not then… not now! (Matthew 15:7-9; John 4:24) They served God, but loved their own gods more! (And as such, displeased Him) (Matthew 6:24; James 4:4) Anytime we are more concerned about what WE want, rather than what God wants. “Hedonistic” Christianity!

Conclusion Elijah to the people: (1 Kings 18:21) “And Elijah came to all the people, and said, ‘How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.’ But the people answered him not a word.” Unless we are careful, our religion can become like the religion of the Samaritans!
