NEWS AND OTHER PIECES OF INFORMATION

Usually people are confused with the concept of the news and other piece of information. News has to be distinguished from other pieces of information like fact, gossips, rumors, literary piece of work and history.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY NEWS? News is information about something that has happened recently, or ‘reports of recent events that appear in newspapers, television, radio, internet or any other media.

DEFINITION OF NEWS BY SCHOLARS According to Michel V. Charnley, “News is the timely report of facts or opinion of either interest or importance or both, to considerable member of people.” According to Paul de Maeseneer, “News is new piece of information about a significance and recent event that effects the audience and is of interest them.” -

According to Neil McNeil, “News is complain of fact or events of current interest of importance to the readers of the newspaper printing it.” According to Stanley Walker, “News is more unpredictable than the winds. Sometimes it is the repetition with new characters of tales as old as the pyramids, and again, it may be almost outside the common experience.” -

According to Reuters, “The rise and fall of the governments, wars, stories of peaceful international relations, the doings and movements and sayings of famous people, manmade disaster –those are essentially what news is.”

NEWS AND OTHER PIECE OF INFORMATION

Facts Though news are closely related with facts, all facts are not news. News, not depending on fact is propaganda; however, news matters with the presentation of fact. Combination of fact and journalistic presentation makes news.

Gossips and rumors Gossips and rumors are not news because they does not depend upon facts. Their validity of truth cant be measured; they are one sided and subjective. News is published and broadcast by mass communication media; but rumors and gossips spray without media.

Propaganda Propaganda is different than news. This is ‘artificial news’ created by group of people with vested interest to manipulate general public for time being. Propaganda usually are one-sided and biased, which does not have transparency of source.

Propaganda may be spread for purposes including political or ideological reasons, partisan agenda, religious and commercial motivation .

Literature Literature is relaxed writing and written for self-satisfaction . But news is hurried write-up, complete in deadline and written in the language of readers. News depend upon fact whereas literature depend upon fiction.

Most news are design to inform or explain, whereas literature is written to entertain, evoke motion or stimulate thoughts.

History History deals with the things of past whereas news deals with current events. Both (history and news) are based on facts, written in simple language for readers to understand. News is first rough draft of history.

History is written chronologically whereas news is written according to relevance of the news value. Though history and news have nail-flesh relationship, they are two distinct phenomena.
