Boundaries By Lewis Dijkstra Deputy Head of Unit Analysis Unit, DG Regional Policy 1

Structure Revision of Cities – Larger Urban Zones Version codes Sub-city districts Link to degree of urbanisation Metro regions

Revision of cities-larger urban zones City revision is completed. Will be updated once a complete population grid is available. End of 2014? High level of continuity is desirable. Larger urban zones: all have been revised except HU and ES. HU revision still this year. ES in 2014. Other NSIs who wish to use more recent data to revise LUZs?

Version codes No significant boundary changes: C/K/L1 Any outstanding issues?

Sub-city districts Methodology Codes Questions

Link to degree of urbanisation Cities = densely populated or large urban areas If boundaries change, continuity is the preferred option for cities. If needed, population shares can be verified for merges using a table, for boundary shifts using GIS based on a material published by REGIO. Regional Working Paper to be published 2013 Eurostat regional yearbook includes a chapter on the links and differences

Metro regions Updated to reflect: Data available from Eurostat Changes in NUTS 3 regions Changes in LUZ Data available from Eurostat Used in 8th Progress Report Most changes are minor. We can circulate revised definition Also covered in Eurostat regional yearbook
