MAP ACTIVITY!!!!

New England Colonies Settlement English settlers settled in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Settlements founded by Puritans and Pilgrims for religious freedom. Puritans are people who wanted to follow a way of life they thought would be more acceptable to what the Christian God wanted. Pilgrims traveled on the Mayflower from England to North America.

Puritans and Pilgrims

New England Colonies Government Self-governed. New England had a democratic government. The citizens of each town took personal responsibility to participate in the governance of the town. They participated in the discussions, and voted for the projects.

New England Colonies Religion Settlers were mostly Protestants. The first settlers came to North America to establish a model religious community. Life in New England was dominated by church, and there were severe consequences for those who failed to attend, or, those who spoke out against the Puritan ways. Singing and celebrating holidays were among things prohibited in Puritan New England.

New England Colonies Economy Thin and rocky soil, making it difficult to farm. Winters were cold and long. Dependent on the ocean. The men became shipbuilders, traders and fisherman. Woods provided timber for homes and ships. Fur Trade.

New England Colonies Relations with Native Americans Originally friendly. Relied on Native Americans for trade and help with survival. Eventually greed for land led to major conflicts with Indians.

The End.
