Long Island in the 20’s By Legend Day Period 6 Mrs. Hicks The 1920’s was an era of economic prosperity for the United States; the end of the Great War guaranteed an appearance of lasting peace and led way for new ideas and inventions. Long Island is an example of such prosperity as it flourished in this time period. Long Island has four different counties that make it up: Queens County, Kings County, Nassau County, and Suffolk County.

Understanding The Boroughs of New York City (Simplified) On January 1, 1898, a man by the name of Robert A. Van Wyck took over as the first mayor of Greater New York. Under him and Tammany Hall (Democratic Political Machine), New York City was created and formed into five boroughs using pieces of New York and Long Island. The areas agreed to the Consolidation of 1898 due to the benefits they could receive from the arrangement, including Queens and Brooklyn as a part of Long Island.

What did long island look like? During the 20’s, Long Island was becoming an urbanized area of New York. Places like Brooklyn and Queens (Western Long Island) began to build more paved roads and sewer systems. Agricultural areas began to be removed in the name of progress. Queens was the most affected by a huge boom of population due to increased housing and massive construction, allowing them to industrialize further.

Who lived there? For Long Island, the 20’s brought a population boom from about 2,750,000 to 4,100,000 people by 1930. Long Island was becoming a densely populated area. Along what is known as the “Gold Coast” (North Long Island) expensive mansions and wealthy estates filled the coast during the 1890’s. Racial diversity was also a part of Long Island based on the large amount of immigration of European foreigners from Ellis Island before World War I such as Irish, Germans, Italians, Russians, etc. This includes many other religious backgrounds that go with European immigration.

How does Long Island connect to New York City? The Southeastern part of the state of New York holds Long Island. New York City is made up of pieces of Long Island which is mentioned in my second slide. Culturally, both were affected massively by the immigrations to the United States through Ellis Island between 1892-1954 which resulted in more than 12 million immigrants to enter the “Land of The Free”. Economically, both were influenced by this raging population growth in a positive and negative way. The positive is both experienced large-scale development and urbanization especially in areas such as Manhattan and Brooklyn. The negative is disease became a major issue in New York during the era because of the high-density areas being created (typhoid, tuberculosis, etc.)

The Long Island Bridge The Brooklyn Bridge or the Queensboro Bridge are the two bridges that connect Long Island to New York. The Queensboro Bridge (top one) was built in 1804 and used to cross from Queens area to Manhattan; this is the closer one to Long Island City. The Brooklyn Bridge (bottom one) was built in 1883, one of the most famous bridges in the United States. The bridge was a result of more than 20 deaths and spans from Manhattan to Brooklyn. It is also known for the interaction with the corrupt political figure Boss Tweed.

Rationale My thesis was based on the history of Long Island in the 20’s. I summarised the complex division and creation of New York City, described the cultural and economic boom that took place in the 20’s, I also spoke on Long Island’s before and after appearance during the era. All of the pictures were used with intent to show the reader a visual representation of what I was writing. I tried to capture the mood of the 20’s through the black and white pictures taken during the time period. Although my project was the history aspect of Long Island, I tried my best to capture some visuals that represented the era very well.

Long Island in the 1920’s Long Island in the 1920’s was the exact vision of how immigrants would see the “Land of Opportunity”. Growing cities and luxurious mansions as well as urbanization with the placement of more paved road and apartment buildings. Long Island was also industrializing; becoming more modern to that time period rather than staying as an agricultural based society.
