PHYSICAL AND AESTHETIC FEATURES LIGURIA Borgio Verezzi Caves TYPE OF SITE Naturalistic place PHYSICAL AND AESTHETIC FEATURES They are considered the most colorful caves in Italy, with amazing colours everywhere, from reddish-brown to grey and yellow. The present tourist path leads the visitors past crystal clear water, stunning stalagmites and stalactites, which look like draperies,and mysterious helictites. AREA COVERED Borgio Verezzi HISTORICAL AND SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION The caves date back to a period from 500,00 to 750,00 years ago. They were discovered by three young boys who climbed down into a chamber following the Battorezza Stream. Everybody ignored the discovery for years, but in 1950 some speleologists found a new passage. They were stunned by the beauty of the caves and the amazing findings, like fossil fragments of bears, elephants and turtles. DATING Discovered in 1933 Opened to tourists on 29 June 1970

ACCESSIBILITY There is no access for wheelchairs and pushchairs. People in need can be helped to get to the first big room. FACILITIES Toilets and a small shop at the reception. A restaurant is round the corner and some bars are quite close.
