Phonics Workshop Year 1

Aims To share information about the phonics screening To share information about set 3 sounds, especially, split digraphs How best to support your child at home To share/talk through common issues faced by parents at home To share ‘extra sounds’ phonics booklet and past screening

What is the phonics screening? Introduced by the government to test children's level of reading (although we know phonics is not the only way a child learns to read...) Children are screened at the end of Year 1 What happens if my child does not pass? Children can retake the screening in Year 2.

What does the phonics screening look like? The phonics screening consists of 40 words to read. Some are real words and some are nonsense words. Real words. Nonsense words or alien names. Materials can be found online.

What is a sound button?
