Course Content Session 1: Computer basics Session 2: Internet Session 3: Email Session 4: Word processing Session 5: Practical task

What's a computer anyway? Computers are EVERYWHERE! Can you label the parts of a desktop computer system?

Key vocabulary for the computers we'll use

Switching on and logging on Check you are safe and comfortable Switch on the computer and monitor Log in by entering the password Fortress1 There's a handout to help you if you are stuck! Chair adjusted correctly No glare Screen adjusted No food or drinks No trailing electrical cables Take a break!

Storing documents and pictures We can store files on : a) The computer : the 'hard drive' b) Floppy disks : no longer used, they don't hold much data c) CD / DVDs - less common now, replaced by USB sticks d) USB stick - also known as flash drive, memory stick e) The Cloud - this means storing things online See if you can identify the USB port (hole/plug) where a USB drive would be plugged in

Memory Sticks Eg: from Argos or Asda That's 11,111 floppy disks!

What is a file? A file is like one piece of work. It could be : A photo A document, like a letter or CV A spreadsheet The way we know they type of file is by the file extension (Eg .xls .doc .jpg .pdf ) This tells the computer what it needs to let us look at the file (which software)

Using folders Storing your files (imagine each as a piece of paper) is just like a physical filing cabinet. If you just throw everything in... you won't find them again! Use folders to organise your files on a desktop PC. I can show you how to do this as we go along if it will be helpful to you.

Wrap up Choose one of the challenges: 1. Start up the PC, then close it down or 2. Open a blank Word document, type one thing you've learned today and then print it 3. Create a folder on the desktop, then complete task 2 and save to the folder you just made

Complete your learning steps. Any questions? Review Complete your learning steps. Any questions? See you next week for our session on the internet. Please be prompt!
