Welcome to Year 1 2018-2019

Procedures for Contacting Staff First point of call: for quick messages teachers and LSP’s will be at each class door at 8.50. Parent Request Form: if you wish to speak confidentially to a member of staff over a concern relating to your child, please fill out a form in the office (or online from our website). All enquiries will be passed on to the appropriate member of staff and you will be contacted within two daysto discuss the issue or arrange a meeting if necessary. KN

Communication School Website: The website will be updated with: events, dates, clubs, curriculum, forms and class information. Parents Evenings: Take place in the Autumn and Spring term (Dates posted on the online calendar PLEASE NOTE Extra Curricular Clubs do NOT run on these evenings to allow all staff to sufficiently prepare). Letters regarding trips of events will be sent to parents on a half termly basis. Reports: Report at end of Summer term final report. Newsletter: Newsletters will be updated every month with information and pictures of the children’s learning. Text Messages: These are sent as reminders and to inform you of information instantly. Monday and a Thursday books changed Spellings – practice each week- 5 Tricky words Times tables -2’s, 5’s, 10’s Weekend book in every Monday KN

The Curriculum EJ

The Curriculum Literacy Spelling – Read write inc. focused Spelling- tricky words sent home every Friday. Whole class reading- activities given based on a specific text. Text based units- text based role play, reading comprehension and different genres of writing. Big Write- a form of showcasing their knowledge and skills developed throughout the week and the literacy unit. EJ

The Curriculum Maths Inspire Maths- From Singapore Maths Focus on Maths Mastery, developing a concrete, pictorial and abstract view of maths Gaining a deeper understanding of topics we teach Children are expected to choose their own challenge once they finish their task. EJ

The Curriculum We want a focus on inquiry based learning- The names of our Inquiry units for this year: Structure of the day: Term Autumn 1 Topic : Step Back in Time – Focus: History (past and present - toys) + Seasons Autumn 2 Neighbourhood Watch/ Come and join the celebration Focus: History of houses + materials Spring 1 206 Bones Focus: Human body Spring 2 Enchanted Focus: Plants Summer 1 Predator Focus: Geography (habitats) + animals Summer 2 NESW Focus: Geography (Landmarks in England/ oceans, continents) EJ

The Curriculum Extra Curricular clubs: Out of school specialists clubs will run every day. These clubs are chargeable. Alongside these chargeable clubs will be Teacher lead clubs which include arts, Physical skills, cooking etc, whereby we will ask for a small contribution each half term. Sherpa kids- outside company who now run the after school club. This must be pre-booked in advance with Sherpa. Details of how to do this are on the school website. KN

Visits and Visitors Visits and Visitors are booked in advance related to the topics / areas of curriculum being covered. We will send out letters (by e-mail) with details each term for the coming events. There will be a contribution request for these events. Special Weeks: Science week/International week Dates for your diary (including trips) will be available on the Calendar on our website. KN

P.E We have two PE slots a week. Oxford circus-Thursday, Friday. Green Park-Wednesday, Thursday. Blackhorse-Monday, Thursday. Please ensure your child has their PE bag in school at all times. This will be sent home at the end of each half term for washing. Children who do not have the correct PE kit in school will not be allowed to take part in PE. Focus of fundamental movement skills, team games, sports and dance. P.E KN

Homework Home Readers: will be changed twice a week. Please read with your child everyday and record this in their reading records. Spelling-5 Tricky words sent home each week for practice. Online Bug Club- Reading- given an individual log in/account. Details to be released shortly. Times tables- 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Project based on Topic which you will be advised on. EJ

Safeguarding Children Please ensure you email or phone if you are running late for pick up. If a child makes a declaration to a member of staff, concerning their safety, we will follow our school procedure and contact the appropriate agencies. Please remember there is a no mobile phone policy in our school KN
