Read “Casey at the Bat,” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer Today, We Will... Read “Casey at the Bat,” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer Describe the characters Analyze the plot

About the Author… Ernest Lawrence Thayer was an American writer and poet who wrote the poem "Casey at the Bat," which is "the single most famous baseball poem ever written" according to the Baseball Almanac. . Thayer was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and raised in nearby Worcester. He graduated from Harvard University in 1885 with a degree in philosophy. During his time there, he was editor of the Harvard Lampoon and a member of the theatrical society. William Randolph Hearst, a friend from both activities, hired Thayer as humor columnist for The San Francisco Examiner. He worked in that position from 1886 to 1888. Thayer's last piece, dated June 3, 1888, was a ballad entitled "Casey" ("Casey at the Bat") which made him "a prize specimen of the one-poem poet" according to American Heritage. He did not become famous for the poem until several months later.

About the Author… There are still a couple of mysteries about the poem. Nobody knows for sure whether Casey (the main character) and Mudville (the setting) were based on real places, or whether they were completely made up. The poem was first recited publicly on August 14, 1888, by an actor named  De Wolf Hopper, on Thayer's 25th birthday. During the mid-1890s, Thayer wrote several other comic poems for the New York Journal. He also began overseeing his family's mills in Worcester full-time. He moved to Santa Barbara in 1912, where he married Rosalind Buel Hammett and retired. He died in 1940, at age 77.
