European Defence Agency’s (EDA’s) MISSION (excerpts) EDA was established by the Council of the EU (ex Council of Ministers) in 2004 inter alia “to improve Union’s defence capabilities …” EDA “shall contribute to … strengthening the industrial and technological base of the defence sector” SB MoD (18 May 2017) 3.a) “endorsed the reinforcement of the Agency along the paths set out in Chapter I of the Conclusions and recommendations of the LTR”: § 8: “EDA as facilitator towards the European Commission and EU Agencies …, exploiting wider EU policies to the benefit of Defence”; § 11: “to support MS in exploiting wider EU policies to the benefit of defence … on the basis of the following elements …: b) Engaging in the assessment and definition of EU regulations or policies …”. 3.i) “encouraged EDA to continue in close consultation with MS to ensure that the interests and specificities of defence are taken into account in wider EU policies”. 3.j) “supported EDA’s revised approach towards establishing a structured dialogue and enhanced engagement with industry …”. Overarching objectives (SB Doc 2017-3), § 48: a) “to act as an interface towards wider EU policies by sharing with industry information on EU [incl. funding] regulations/policies, …; b) to support access to EU funding”. On 18 May 2017, Ministers of Defence “endorsed the reinforcement of the EDA as: facilitator towards the European Commission (EC) and EU Agencies … exploiting wider EU policies to the benefit of Defence and central operator with regard to EU funded defence-related activities”
