Macbeth Vocabulary – List 2

vengeance (Act II, scene iii) (noun) – punishment inflicted in response to an offense The parents of the murdered girl are seeking vengeance against her killer.

tyrant (Act II, scene iii) (noun) – a ruler who exercises absolute power unfairly or brutally. Because of his abusive tactics, Macbeth is considered a tyrant by his people.

treason (Act II, scene iii) (noun) – the betrayal of trust To go against one’s country and expose their secrets is an act of treason.

temperate (Act II, scene iii) (adjective) – mild; not extreme or excessive Since the weather is temperate, we’ll be able to enjoy our family picnic without worrying about extreme heat.

steep (Act II, scene iii) (verb) – soak (food or tea) in water or other liquid so as to extract its flavor. I often let my tea steep for several minutes before sipping on it, so that the flavor is stronger.

quench (Act II, scene ii) (verb) – to satisfy or bring an end to A tall glass of ice, cold water will really quench my thirst.
