Presentation transcript:

Introduction Zoe House- Head teacher of Lees Brook School Stella Mosley - Career Lead for Northworthy Trust. Both passionate regarding careers and enterprise for students. Realise the importance of businesses being involved in the schools careers programme. We need to address the needs of the D2N2 area.

Context of the School Lees Brook School is based in Chaddesden, Derby In 2011 became part of the Northworthy Trust. Lees Brook has a mixed cohort of students from a range of economic backgrounds. 30% PP students Consistently low NEET figures

Why do Trusts need a Careers Lead Why do Trusts need a Careers Lead? I have a overview of the schools careers provision and manage its career plan across the Trust so that we can meet the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks by 2020. 1. A stable careers plan 2. Learning from Labour market information 3. Addressing the needs of every pupil. 4. Linking curriculum learning to careers 5. Encounters with employers 6. Experiences of workplaces 7. Encounters with further and higher education 8. Personal Guidance

Why do we need to do this and how this relates to the D2N2 area. Students have low aspirations. Social mobility is a concern for students in this area. Developing the skills necessary for 21st century. Developing students to be resilient and to have transferrable skills. Reduce NEETS for students to make well, informed realistic decisions regarding their post 16 options. Research has shown the more meaningful encounters student have with businesses less likely they are to become NEET. Employers don’t feel schools are equipping students with the necessary skills for the world of work. Ensuring students have relevant qualifications – raising literacy and numeracy skills.

Employer engagement- The Benefits Students who have encounters with employers are more likely to make positive destinations post 16. 2018 Year 11 cohort 100% positive destinations into training or apprenticeships. 2018 10% of students gained an apprenticeship after school. Students with different encounters can have a light bulb moment. Students can see the importance of subjects as they gain an insight into the importance of career management skills and qualifications.

Implementation 1 Each school within the Trust has completed the Compass Audit. This evaluation tool gives a clear view on your career programme/ activities and how effective it links with the benchmarks. 2 Lees Brook has a strong partnership with an Enterprise Adviser to support the school with their careers plan guided by the 8 Benchmarks. This partnership adds value to the school. 3 I strongly believe there is not one single activity that a student will receive their careers knowledge, it is about having careers embedded into the curriculum and delivering activities related to the benchmarks.

Activities to support a stable careers programme? Since September Lees Brook students have participated in many activities, this a snap shot of some of the activities. These activities are designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge for the future and all involved employer involvement. STEM Days with local and national businesses within their Science lessons RAF/BAE Day Visits to an author Talk from a photographer within Art and Design Rolls Royce mentors supporting students with extra Maths. Raspberry Pi Day Post 16 Taster day- every Year 11 experienced a post 16 setting. Whats my line and employability workshops.

Positive relationships with businesses Remember employers are volunteering their time, it is important for them to feel valued and appreciated. Nurturing employer relationships Pre-event information to business of the format of the day. Celebrating collaborative working- events on social media, photos shared of events etc. Sharing success stories for example- a student is more focussed in lessons due to employer talk/activity. Longer term projects shows an impact to the employer. Evaluate what works well and also what needs to be changed or improved. Supply of food and drink- expect hospitality to take a part of your careers budget. Time at the beginning for introductions and end of session for feedback on the session.

What do employers say Important to have a clear structure at school in place. We want to see the school has a careers strategy in place and have a vision. Relationships are the key for working with businesses. Continuous communication between the school and business. Build connectivity and trust within the partnership. Employers can see when the school management is involved and proactive. We want to know the support you need and how we can help. Advertise the relationship with business- Twitter, publications etc.

Challenges? School budgets. Curriculum constraints Ensuring all students are involved. Engaging businesses Time Future skills needed
