Presentation transcript:

Communication is more than Words Working effectively with people from Various Cultures

Culture is the full range of learned human behaviour patterns What is Culture? Culture is the full range of learned human behaviour patterns “…Includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society” Edward B. Tylor

Do we have a Culture?

Do we have a Culture? Yes we do We’re usually not aware of our own culture The way we live out our lives seems “Natural” and/or “Correct” and even “Superior” to other cultures We tend to judge other cultures based on our own values and beliefs (Ethnocentrism)

Aspects of Culture Culture is learned, not inherent Culture is a powerful human tool for survival Culture defines what is acceptable and unacceptable (Clothing, physical gestures, behaviour, use of time…) Culture is cumulative Culture is constantly changing We do not know everything about our own culture.

Causes of Cultural Misunderstandings Miscommunication and misinterpretation Lack of awareness of other cultural beliefs, practices and lifestyles Applying your own cultural values in your work when dealing with people from other cultures (Ethnocentrism)

When a language Barrier Exists Expect difference in attitudes, beliefs, verbal and non-verbal language Speak clearly Avoid using jargon and idioms Patience Be prepared to act or demonstrate tasks to ensure you’re understood Use a professional interpreter

Using an Unqualified Interpreter (Family member) Not knowing medical/legal terminology Interpreter may be good at English, but poor in other languages Questioning of bodily functions can be embarrassing – Inaccurate information Objectives will not be met Legal ramifications
