Equality Policy Unit What is our role? University’s centre for strategy, policy and guidance development on all student and staff equality and inclusion matters Drive the delivery of the University’s Equality and Inclusion Framework working with leaders and managers Provision of expert advice to colleagues across the University to achieve best practice and maximise inclusion for staff and students from all backgrounds Equality Act 2010 and Public Sector Equality Duty advice ‘everyone included, everyone involved’

Equality Policy Unit Where are we now? Diversity is about: Advance HE workshop on ‘Enhancing LGBT Inclusivity at the University of Leeds’ (February 2019) LGBT HE STEM Day (2018 and ongoing) LGBT Staff Network Good relationships with the LUU LGBT History Month (February each year); and lighting up of Parkinson Building Leeds Pride Equality is just what it says - it is making sure that everybody has an equal chance to succeed in the light of their abilities and experience. It is making sure that decisions aren’t based on prejudice, or unnecessary constraints or conditions. Diversity is about: moving beyond giving people access, towards a proper understanding of the diversity within each individual responding proactively and flexibly to the needs, motivations, experiences and skills of individuals. Inclusion – the University has adopted a model of inclusion (complete acceptance and integration of all students and employees regardless of diversity background that proactively leads to a sense of belonging, engagement and full participation within and across the University)

Complements and underpins the other training sessions. Mandatory for all staff to complete by 2018 Recruitment and selection training – for chairs and members of interview panels (booked via OD&PL) Advance HE website - https://www.advance-he.ac.uk Trans Guidance - https://equality.leeds.ac.uk/support/guidance-to- support-trans-staff-and-students/ I can’t cover the more practical skills in detail in an hour and a half. There are, however, other training courses available:   E-learning - An on-line e-learning package that you can complete at your desk in your own time. This will provide essential basic information, but is even better if combined with the face to face training. Recruitment and Selection - offered by HR through SDDU Springboard – offered by SDDU, this is aimed at personal development for women at all levels in the University. ‘everyone included, everyone involved’
