Joining the eBooks Revolution New Opportunities for Translating Knowledge into Action 18th November 2013

Aims Build insight and understanding Engage in this dynamic area of development. Support development of eBook Strategy to contribute to Knowledge into Action.

Key question for today…… How can eBooks help us to Deliver Knowledge into Action? Challenges and Opportunities

Scotland’s Digital Future Circles of influence 2020 Vision Scotland’s Digital Future Efficiency and Productivity

Users We read more online journal article & book chapters than we ever did in print format - in the same time. We demand 24/7 access to content, instant gratification at a click, and look for `the answer’ rather than for a particular format, e.g. an article or monograph. We scan, flick and `power browse’ through digital content – horizontal rather than vertical use. CIBER Report 2012

Users (Continued) Mobile users are the fastest-growing user community. Mobile visits are information 'lite': short, non-interactive, little content per visit. 20% of UK respondents have used an eBook in the past 6 months; 30% have plans to purchase one. Bowker Global eBook monitor

eBook opportunities Responding to user needs and behaviours eBooks respond to horizontal information-seeking behaviour in digital age - “power browsing” across resources for specific answers rather than linear working through a book from start to finish. Increasingly “the norm”.

From providing information to applying knowledge – Frontline practice Knowledge into Action From providing information to applying knowledge – Frontline practice Service improvement Service transformation. Both needs incorporated in our national knowledge management strategy for NHSS and counterpart for social services.

Public Services Reform: Digital Enablement 2020 Vision “By 2020 everyone is able to live longer healthier lives at home, or in a homely setting…… We will have a healthcare system where we have integrated health and social care, a focus on prevention, anticipation and supported self management.” Scotland’s Digital Future: Digital Health & Care Smart Mobility Digital participation

eBook opportunities Integrated access to knowledge across public services settings – NHS, public libraries, education etc. Efficiencies through collaborative purchasing across sectors. Enabling access and support through links with eHealth and digital strategy.

Opportunities for Librarians Digital library intermediaries – “knowledge brokers”. Awareness Enabling access – organisation and description. Quality assurance Enabling use - training and user support Collaboration with users

Summing up Joining the eBooks Revolution is essential to Knowledge into Action – locally and nationally: Reach new users Support new user needs New routes to embed knowledge in frontline practice. Provide integrated knowledge support across public services – “whole system” approach Achieve efficiencies through collaborative purchasing Build knowledge broker role as “digital intermediary” .
