The Moon China landing on moon 1/2/2019

The Moon The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite It is estimated to be about 4.5 billion years old

weathering, erosion, atmosphere Why is Earth not like this? Craters Why so many? What are these? No atmosphere weathering, erosion, atmosphere Why is Earth not like this?

The Moon’s interior is thought to have layers, similar to earth Features The Moon’s interior is thought to have layers, similar to earth

The Moon’s Surface Dark areas called Maria (from Latin mare, meaning sea). These are ancient lava flows. Light areas are Lunar Highlands, which are mountain ranges made of lighter color rocks.

Moon Rocks Rocks on the Moon are made of minerals similar to those on Earth.

27.3 days How long does one revolution of the moon take? How long does one rotation of the moon take? ESRTs p15

What phenomenon does this explain? We only ever see one side of the moon.

However, it takes 29.5 days for the Moon to complete one phase cycle.

Why?? Moon’s orbit Moon has to revolve for 2 more days to get back to the new moon phase. Earth Moon

Phases of the Moon

Dark Side/Light Side

Changes in Shape

Phases Moon Phases are apparent changes in shape due to the position of the Moon in its orbit.

Phases Of The Moon

What causes the phases of the moon? The moon's revolution around Earth. 18

What phase of the moon is this? New Gibbous New Crescent 3rd Quarter

What is "waxing"? more of the moon's surface can be seen

What is "waning"? less of the moon's surface can be seen

Regents Question Which sequence of Moon phases could be observed from Earth during a 2-week period?

Regents Answer

Why does the moon rise later each day? because as the Earth rotates, the moon revolves

Approximate Times of Moonrise and Moonset    moonrise    moonset new moon 06:00 AM 06:00 PM waxing crescent 09:00 AM 09:00 PM first quarter 12:00 PM 12:00 AM waxing gibbous 03:00 PM 03:00 AM full moon waning gibbous third quarter waning crescent How many hours is the moon visible each day? 12 hours

The phases of the moon are what type of event? Cyclic

Leap Year! It takes the Earth about 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes and 16 seconds to orbit the sun, so (almost) every four years, a day is added to keep the calendar in sync with the seasons. Occasionally, the calendar will leap the leap day to adjust for the fact that the extra time isn’t exactly six hours per year. (And lets not even get into leap seconds.) The uneven numbers create an interesting situation for people born on Feb. 29 — leapers. For legal purposes, their birthdays will be on either Feb. 28 or March 1 in non-leap years — which depends on the country they’re in.

Tides

Tides & Eclipses Astronomy

What causes tides?

Moon’s Effect on Tides Tides are the periodic rise and fall of the ocean surface Tides are caused by the gravitational attraction of the Moon and the Sun on ocean water High tide will occur on the side of the Earth that is facing the Moon as well as on the opposite side of the Earth.

Tides Caused by Moon’s gravity pulling Earth’s water. Low Earth High High **Tides always High in line with Moon. Low

How many tides a day? 2 high tides 2 low tides

Why are there not exactly 12 hours between tides? because the moon revolves around the Earth while the Earth rotates

Regents Question The change in the tides as shown on the graph is primarily the result of Earth’s rotation and the Moon’s revolution Earth’s rotation and revolution The Moon’s rotation and Earth’s revolution The Moon’s rotation and revolution

Earth’s rotation and the Moon’s revolution Regents Answer Earth’s rotation and the Moon’s revolution

Phases and Tides Special tides occur when the Sun’s gravitational field also interacts with the Moon’s gravitational field.

New and Full Phase – Extreme .high and low tides. Spring Tides Sun Earth New and Full Phase – Extreme .high and low tides. Moon’s and Sun’s gravities pulling in one direction.

New or Full Moon Spring?

Neap Tides Causes weaker tides called During Quarter Phases – Earth Water being pulled in two directions. Causes weaker tides called Neap Tides

1st & 3rd Quarters Neap?

Regents Question What is the main reason that the gravitational attraction between Earth and the Moon changes each day? Earth’s axis is tilted at 23.5○. Earth’s rotational speed varies with the seasons. The moon has an elliptical orbit. The moon has a spherical shape.

The moon has an elliptical orbit. Regents Answer

solar and lunar eclipses Why don’t we have solar and lunar eclipses every month? The moon’s orbit is tilted 5° from the Earth’s orbit.

solar and lunar eclipses? What’s the difference between solar and lunar eclipses? Solar Lunar Earth goes into moon’s shadow moon goes into Earth’s shadow

When does a solar eclipse occur? at new moon phase.

Solar Eclipse Only total eclipse if in the umbra. Very rare Sun’s Rays Penumbra Umbra Sun’s Rays Only total eclipse if in the umbra. Very rare

Lunar Eclipse Can only occur during the full moon phase. Umbra Penumbra Every one on the night side sees the eclipse. Can only occur during the full moon phase.
