Course induction The first session Welcome

Staying safe (safeguarding) & Prevent HACL is fully committed to ensuring that the needs of all learners are at the centre of everything we do. We will strive to ensure that all learners and staff work and learn in a safe and supportive environment. HACL also supports the Prevent Strategy. Prevent is the UK government’s counter-terrorism strategy which aims to stop people being drawn into or supporting terrorism. All staff who work with young people or vulnerable adults have a duty to respond and report immediately any signs of harm, abuse or extremism or radicalisation that are recognised or disclosed. If you as a learner recognise anything that you consider might risk your or anybody else’s safety, please report it to a member of staff as soon as possible. Please ask at our centre office for more information and our full policy. Staff and learners should be pro-active, this means that any opportunity you have to promote British Values in your classes should not be missed. We all need to find appropriate ways to promote British values in a meaningful way and keep our communities safe.

Equality & Diversity (E&D) HACL has a duty to celebrate diversity and ensure that everybody who comes into contact with Adult Learning is fairly treated and not discriminated against. Both learners and staff are responsible for ensuring that we promote equality and diversity for all. If you observe any behavior that you find unacceptable and/or believe contravenes the service’s E&D policy, you have a responsibility to report this to a member of staff. As a service we have a diversity calendar that is available on Moodle. If you think of any other ways we can celebrate diversity as a service please speak to your tutor or Sophie Alexis on salexis@hillingdon.gov.uk

Other important stuff……. In addition to safeguarding, Prevent and Equality and Diversity, we are expected by Ofsted to help learners develop: English and maths and ICT skills Wellbeing Social skills Work skills Your tutor will talk to you about how these things relate to your course and help you to set appropriate personal goals.

Health and safety How many health and safety risks can you spot? What are the risks associated with your course?

Please help us to achieve this. If attendance on a qualification course is below 80%, you will not be able to enrol on another qualification course.

Surveys We ask you to complete 4 surveys during your course. These surveys show us where to improve and what impact we have made as well as telling us about your progress after you finish with us. Two of these surveys are internal and two are external and results go directly to the government. Links for these surveys are on your Moodle page. Mid-course feedback survey (Hillingdon Adult and Community Learning) Mid-course survey (Education and Skills Funding Agency) End of course survey (Ofsted) End of course survey about your progress (Hillingdon Adult and Community Learning) We may also send you a destination tracking survey by email after your course has finished.

Quality assurance and your voice – Your tutor will now tell you about: the Compliments, Comments and Complaints procedure ILPs learner involvement opportunities such as; volunteering, becoming a course rep or joining the learner council.

Course representatives and the Learner council Each class is invited to elect one course representative through whom you can direct any comments or complaints. If you have a course lasting 8 weeks or more we require you to elect a course representative. To say thank you, the course rep receives a £10 voucher off their next course once the mid course surveys are received for the whole class. Course representatives may choose to stand for our learner council. Keep an eye out for elections in November 2018! If you want to be part of a consultative body of learners who work with HACL staff to improve the Service for all learners then you could apply to be an elected member of our Learner Council. Contact Sophie Alexis our Learner Engagement Officer on salexis@hillingdon.gov.uk for more information
